Hiking Timp

Zack really loves hiking.  He especially loves hiking to the tops of mountains.  Mostly I think this is cool, except I kind of worry that he'll start doing crazy things as he gets older.  Oh well, there are worse things to worry about I guess.  Anyway, he's been wanting to hike to the top of Timp for years.  And for years we say this is the year it'll happen.  And then life gets busy and another year goes by.  So this year was finally the year!  It was very last second, as is everything in our life.  Poor Kate.  She LOVES to plan ahead.  Like at breakfast she asks what we're having for dinner.  She would love to have every second of life planned out.  And I have to keep telling her sorry.  Right now we live minute to minute, so I can tell you what I think might happen, but there's a good chance that will change.  She loves it.

Anyway, that was a total tangent.  Jake and Zack decided Friday night they were going to hike Timp the next morning.  At first I wasn't going to go with them, but then I decided this is one of the few peaks I can probably make it up, so I better join in the adventure.  I hiked Timp once a long, long time ago.  Like pre-mission.  And I hiked it from the other side and in the middle of the summer.  So this was really different.  We hiked from our side of the mountain and started a little after 6am.  It was so beautiful.  The millions of pictures I'll post don't do it justice.  We hiked across snow, saw waterfalls and mountain goats, and scrambled up rocks to get to the top.  Usually I'm warm blooded and never cold when I'm exercising, but not for this.  There was a cold wind blowing most of the time, and it went right through my clothes.  Apparently I need better wind gear.  I was so cold at the peak that I stayed up there for all of 5 minutes and then took off.  I thought I was going to die.  Gratefully it warmed up for the hike down.  The last couple hours of hiking were kind of a suffer fest.  You're tired, want to be done, but still have lots of miles left.  My feet don't handle lots of miles anymore.  And if I'd known I was going to do that hike I probably would have gotten new shoes.  But we made it to the top and back down again.  And I'm really glad I went on this adventure with my boys!  They were even nice enough to wait for me once in awhile.  And now for a million pictures.

Ready to go!

I'm sure they were waiting for me here

This is at the top.  Can you tell I'm so cold I want to die?

September Happenings

September was a low-key kind of month.  We stayed plenty busy, but nothing too exciting.  Only one mountain bike race because the other was cancelled due to rain.  Major bummer.  But we got to spend an exciting weekend in Vernal to race.  We actually camped at a pretty cool place.  But we set up camp in the dark and left in the dark, so we didn't get to experience much of the coolness.  Kate and Zack both raced this time.  This was Zack's first race back since his wreck.  I was way more nervous than normal.  He had to start clear at the back because he missed the last race.  He managed to move up 20 spots and not wreck, so I'm counting it as a win.  That course is not the funnest.  The weather is always brutal.  Last year they raced in huge gusts of wind, this year it was so, so hot.  And there isn't a single tree on the course, so you just bake.  As I always say, good thing these kids are young and strong.

The weekend the other race got canceled, I decided we would have lots of fun cleaning out Zack and Kate's rooms.  Unfortunately, they didn't get Sage's organizing gene.  Kate's messy room bothers her.  Zack could live in ten tons of filth and not care.  Heaven help us all.  Anyway, the kids were super excited to spend their day cleaning.  On top of that, I made Zack go clothes shopping with me when he was done with his room.  I let him drive clear to Park City, so that made it a little better.  The kids didn't love the day, but I sure did!

Camping in Vernal.  This was the moon, not the sun.  Huge!

August Happenings

August was a good month.  I feel like summer went out on a high note, which is always a good thing.  The kids started school, and so far things are going smoothly.  So far.  We went to a rodeo.  Honestly, Heber's rodeo is not my favorite.  But the derby more than makes up for it.  I included a picture of our showcase house because we spent A LOT of time there.  A LOT.  But it went really well and we all survived, so that's a good thing.  Kate had another mountain bike race.  She did a great job!  Poor Zack had to sit that one out.  He didn't enjoy that much, but thankfully only had to miss that race.

Mountain Bike Wrecking

It was probably inevitable that at some point, with all of our mountain biking, I would be posting about a wreck.  Hopefully I won't have another one to write about for a long time.  We all went to Powder Mountain the Monday before the race to pre-ride the course.  Jake and Zack started out with all the fast people.  Kate and I rode together, not so fast.  About half-way through the course one of our friends rode up to me and asked me if the keys were in the car.  When I asked him why he said Zack had wrecked, was probably concussed, and needed to get to the hospital.  I could see a car in front of me heading up the trail.  They had loaded Zack in the car to get him back to the parking lot.  I took off after the car and Kate followed as fast as she could behind me.  One of the many miracles we experienced is that we all somehow got to the parking lot at the same time.  This was a 5 mile course, so the chances of that happening are slim to none.  Also, Zack happened to wreck on one of the few areas on the course that are accessible with a car.  Another miracle for sure.

Anyway, we got Zack into the car and took off for the hospital in Ogden.  As a side note, and to document for posterity, Jake told me to drive because I drive faster than him.  Yep, you heard it here.  Poor Zack was in so much pain as we drove.  He was mostly whimpering in the back seat.  So I drove extra fast.  Apparently he and Jake went to pass some kids and Zack hit a rock wrong and was on the ground before he even realized he was falling.  He was going pretty fast and hard, so he fell fast and hard.  He landed hard on his left side.  He got a big cut above his eye, and for a few minutes couldn't see anything out of that eye.  His hip and his hand hurt bad, but mostly his head was hurting him at this point.  He never lost consciousness, which is good.  In fact, his helmet didn't even get a scratch on it because he hit the side of his face, not his head.  So that wasn't very helpful.  His sunglasses got really scratched up.  If he hadn't been wearing them there's a good chance his injury to his eye would have been a lot worse.  I forget that when you're mountain biking you wear glasses as much for protection as you do for the sun.  This wreck was a good reminder of all of the little safety things we do when we're riding.

After he fell a bunch of coaches from the Farmington mountain bike team got right to work on him.  They were so helpful.  They got his cut all bandaged up and took really good care of him.  They were the ones who got him in their car and to the parking lot.  At the race we went over and met them and said thanks.  Gotta love Farmington people!

So we spent a really long night at the hospital.  I knew Zack was feeling better when he said he might never be able to go on a mission because he would still be in the hospital waiting to be seen.  It was not a fast process.  They did a CT scan of his head and xrays of his hand and hip.  All of those looked good, so they stitched up his cut.  He ended up with 13 stitches.  Gratefully we were close to family, so parents came to help.  My dad and Jake were able to give Zack a blessing and Tracy kept us company.  The girls went to Dad and Kathy's house, which was much better than having them stuck there all night.  We finally got back home at 1:15 in the morning.  Sage was excited that this was the latest she'd ever been awake.

Zack is mostly good to go now.  He had to miss that mountain bike race, which he was really bummed about.  But he's back  mountain biking again and raced in Vernal over the weekend.  No wrecks this time.  His left eye is still really blurry.  We're hopeful that his vision will come back completely, but there's a chance it will be permanently blurry.  All in all, we feel blessed that the wreck wasn't any worse.
