Jake and I got to go to Bar Harbor, Maine for one of his builder groups. We were excited to go as we've never been to that part of the country before. It was a great trip.
We spent a lot of time in Acadia, the national park. We ended up exploring more of it than planned. On our first day we thought we'd do a couple of little hikes. We were waiting for a bus that kept not coming. So Jake pulled out his phone and saw that there were trails that would take us to where we were waiting to go on the bus. Looked like about 6 miles of hiking. Six miles didn't sound too bad, and we had nothing else planned that day, so we decided to go for it. Well, let's just say that we started hiking at 11:00 and got back to our car at 5:00. It ended up being a lot more than we bargained for. We ended up hiking 8 miles, but 4,000 feet of elevation. There were big sections that were straight up for like a mile. Because we weren't planning on doing anything big, we both just had a granola bar each. We were definitely exhausted when we finished. But we made it back to our rental just in time to take paddle boards out in the bay. It was so pretty I didn't want to miss out on that activity.
One afternoon we went out on a boat with the group and saw lobster traps, got to hold some lobsters, and just rode around. So pretty. I ate more lobster than I ever have before, which isn't saying much. I like it, but not enough to pay for it most of the time.
The national park has a bunch of carriage roads that are closed to traffic. So we rented gravel bikes and went for a ride. We rode 40 miles on the carriage roads, and ended up with a climb up Cadillac Mountain. I was so tired by the time we started the climb, but I knew I'd regret it if I didn't do it. I made it to the top, and it wasn't a horrible climb. Not like some of the climbs around here where it's so steep you can barely pedal. And we were at sea level, so my lungs were happy.
Our last day there we just drove to a bunch of the little towns. All so pretty and such a unique area. So glad we were able to go.
This is how it looked right outside our hotel. So pretty. It was crazy how much the water level changed with the tide. At low tide you could walk to the island in the background. |
We hiked up and down so many stairs. Someone spent a lot of time cutting them into the mountain. |
At the end of our never-ending hike, we hiked up Beehive Mountain. It involved climbing up the side of the mountain. Almost as crazy as Angels Landing. |
The peak we accidentally hiked up. I think the elevation was only like 1200 feet. But we started hiking at like zero, so lots of climbing. |
